The other week I started an assessment design checklist. The checklist will contain major takeaway points about how to build a constructive assessment for both my students and myself. Several weeks ago I included the need to center assessments around key course concepts, and that assessments should be formative in some way. To read more about the makings of my checklist, visit my last blog.
Currently I’m learning about the importance of feedback as an assessment, and just how challenging it is to deliver constructive feedback. There’s much to learn about feedback, and I feel I’m just at the tip of the iceberg. What I do know is that, in order for feedback to aid in student learning, it must help to answer questions and be offered at appropriate times to students. These are major takeaway points that I’ve added to my checklist. I’ve also gone on to elaborate on the importance of clear assessment and content expectations and the need to incorporate varied methods of teaching and learning to provide all students with optimal learning experiences. My expanded checklist can be seen here.
