We are all designers. This was not something I believed until I took my last master’s course on design thinking. As an educator I design all the time. I design activities, units, lesson plans, objectives, assignments, schedules, and more. Through design we create and often recreate again until our goal is accomplished or we’ve achieved a desired outcome. For me, these goals and desired outcomes are centered around my students and their ability to understand and transfer their knowledge.
I’m beginning to realize that design and redesign is not effective without feedback and assessments. I’m also learning that successful assessments might be more difficult to create than I expected. To help me provide the best educational experience to my students and create ideal assessments, I’ve started an assessment checklist.
This checklist will include big ideas about assessments and ways in which I can incorporate them. I’ve started my checklist, titled Assessment Design Checklist. Two main ideas I learned about this week are focusing assessments on a unit or content goal(s) and assuring my assessment is formative.
