I've been researching innovative technologies (IT) that I can learn to use and incorporate into an educational lesson plan. This has not been an easy task. The definition of innovative technology is technology used to challenge the current way of doing something.
I teach undergraduates, so using maker kits such as Squishy Circuits in my lesson plan was eliminated. I explored augmented reality but eliminated the few that I found. One was only compatible with Apple products and the other didn't resonate with me. To solve my problem, I focused on the end-goal of my lesson and found another IT, quick response codes (QR codes).
The use of these codes will remove the teacher-centered aspect of a lecture in my dentistry course. Students will spend lecture period rotating through different stations in small groups to gain knowledge. QR codes will be found at each station and will correspond to the assigned task(s).
Linked to QR codes, students can access tutorials or informative YouTube videos to assist in the learning experience at each station. QR codes will allow students to learn in alternative ways and will offer unlimited access to resources.
Using technology to access social media such as YouTube will contribute to our participatory culture. In this culture, people contribute, share, and learn with one another. Use of appropriate social media should be used in the classroom. As stated by Jenkins, "Don't build something like YouTube, use YouTube. . . That as a professor we should create our content in such a way that it travels around the planet and is accessible. . . " (Pull, 2018, 1:55).
After choosing my IT, the lesson plan was easy to create. I believe the use of QR codes will be fun for students and will aid in their transfer of content.
