Me- As an Educator

Retrieved from Flickr

What makes an educator? To help illustrate the pieces of me as an educator, I created an infographic using Venngage. I included the obvious components: the topic or content that I teach, my students, and technology and its use in education. I also included the pieces that further define me, such as adaptability and curiosity. They will continue to grow as I become more skilled in the methods and theories of teaching and learning.

The author Thomas Friedman created the formula, CQ (curiosity quotient) + PQ (passion quotient) > IQ (intelligence quotient). This equation resonates with me when I reflect on how I'm defined as an educator. Companion animal care and my students' success are my main priorities and interests. I must stay hungry and inquisitive to continue to fuel my passions. This begins by reflection and questioning. Shyam Salim and Nivedita Shridar state, "According to Friedman, passion and curiosity are key components for education in a world where information is readily available to everyone and where global markets reward those who have learned how to learn and are self-motivated to learn" (Salim & Shridar, 2016).

I have much to question. Am I meeting the needs of my students? What defines student success? How can I evaluate my teaching methods? These wicked problems are difficult to define but the core of my success. After reflecting, it’s clear that questioning is more important than knowing.
